JONAMAC
_edited.png)
Jonamac is an early-fall apple with a crisp, juicy texture and a delicious sweet-tart flavor. A cross between Jonathan and McIntosh, Jonamac is similar to a McIntosh but slightly sweeter, with a distinctive honey-like flavor and subtle cinnamon and nutmeg undertones.
It is especially good for fresh eating and snacking, but it can also be used for applesauce, salads, and baking, although it tends to soften and break down when cooked.
Jonamac typically ripens in late August to early September, about a week earlier than McIntosh, making it a great choice for the beginning of the fall apple season.
The variety was developed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva from a cross made in 1944 and was officially introduced in 1972. It was originally known by the number NY 44428-5 before receiving the name Jonamac through a naming contest.
With its beautiful dark-red skin, aromatic flavor, and early harvest, Jonamac is a wonderful apple for anyone who loves the classic flavor of a McIntosh but wants something a little sweeter and more complex.
