GOLDEN DELICIOUS
Golden Delicious is a classic yellow apple known for its mild, honey-sweet flavor, crisp and juicy flesh, and low acidity.
Its mellow, aromatic taste makes it especially enjoyable for fresh eating and snacking, while its natural sweetness and versatility also make it excellent for salads, applesauce, pies, baking, cooking, canning, and freezing. Because Golden Delicious apples are naturally sweet, they often require less added sugar in pies and applesauce than more tart varieties.
Golden Delicious generally ripens in mid-to-late September, depending on the growing region, and is considered a mid-season apple. One of its most interesting facts is that, despite their similar names, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious are not closely related varieties.
Golden Delicious was discovered as a chance seedling in West Virginia in the early 1900s and became popular for its attractive golden-yellow skin, reliable productivity, and excellent storage potential. Its thin skin, rich aroma, and ability to work equally well as a fresh-eating and cooking apple have made Golden Delicious a longtime favorite in orchards and kitchens alike.
