MUTSU

mutsu-apple.png

Mutsu, also known as Crispin, is a large, distinctive Japanese apple prized for its crisp, firm texture, juicy flesh, and wonderfully balanced sweet-tart flavor. It has a refreshing combination of sweetness and acidity, with subtle honey and spice notes inherited from its Golden Delicious parent.

Mutsu is an excellent all-purpose apple that is delicious for fresh eating and snacking, while its firm flesh holds its shape beautifully when cooked, making it especially good for pies, baking, applesauce, salads, roasting, juicing, and cider.

Mutsu generally ripens in late September through mid-October, depending on the growing region, making it a wonderful late-season apple. One of its most distinctive characteristics is its impressive size—Mutsu apples can grow very large compared with many other varieties.

The variety was developed in Japan from a cross between Golden Delicious and Indo and was introduced in 1948. In the United Kingdom, it was renamed Crispin in the late 1960s. Mutsu is also an excellent keeper and can remain in good condition for several months when properly refrigerated.
