Rogers Red, also known as Rogers Red McIntosh, is a classic McIntosh-type apple prized for its soft, juicy texture and sweet-tart flavor. When fully ripe, it has the familiar aromatic McIntosh flavor with a pleasant balance of sweetness and acidity, making it especially enjoyable for fresh eating and snacking.
Rogers Red is also a versatile cooking apple and works well in applesauce, salads, pies, baking, cider, and juice; it can produce applesauce with an attractive pink color.
Rogers Red is considered a later-ripening McIntosh, typically ready for harvest around mid-September, although the exact timing depends on the growing season.
One of its special qualities is its beautiful, highly colored red skin, which makes it particularly attractive at farm stands and pick-your-own orchards. Rogers Red is actually a red sport (natural mutation) of the original McIntosh, discovered in New York and introduced in the early 1930s.
